Dr. Akhu's ADHD Story
As the pandemic swept across the world, K's life was turned upside down. The sudden shift to online schooling and the lack of social interactions took a toll on their mental well-being. I noticed their once vibrant spirit dimming, replaced with restlessness, frustration, and even tears. It became evident that they faced difficulties managing their ADHD and anxiety in these challenging circumstances.
With a heart full of empathy (my dyslexia helps me understand neurodiversity challenges from the inside) and a professional understanding of ADHD, I knew that K needed my support on multiple levels. I approached their struggles as both a loving mother and a trained psychologist. We engaged in open, heartfelt conversations where they could express their fears and frustrations without judgment. Listening to their concerns helped me gain deeper insights into the emotional turmoil they were experiencing.
Recognizing that the situation required more than maternal instincts, I sought additional professional training in ADHD to help my child better. I immersed myself in the latest research, attended workshops and webinars, and collaborated with other experts in the field. I took a 50-hour professional development course from the esteemed AMEN clinic. Armed with this newfound knowledge, I was determined to create a more effective and tailored approach to support K through their challenges.
Together, we embarked on a journey to create a structured environment that catered to their unique needs. I leveraged my professional expertise to design systems incorporating effective coping strategies for ADHD and anxiety. We worked on establishing a daily routine that balanced schoolwork, breaks, and relaxation time. This predictability provided K with a sense of stability in the midst of uncertainty.
Drawing from my training, I introduced mindfulness exercises and breathing techniques into their daily routine to help manage anxiety and enhance focus. Additionally, I collaborated closely with K's teachers to ensure they received the necessary support in their studies during the virtual learning environment.
As the weeks and months passed, I witnessed a remarkable transformation in K. Their confidence grew, and their academic performance improved significantly. I was proud to see my child blossom into an individual who excelled in school and thrived emotionally.
The process wasn't without its challenges, but our bond as mother and child deepened throughout this experience. We leaned on each other for support, and I cherished the moments when I could be both a mother and a professional advocate for K's well-being.
The journey also opened my eyes to the profound impact that the pandemic had on children's mental health, particularly those dealing with ADHD and anxiety. With my newfound expertise, I was determined to contribute to the larger cause and help other families facing similar challenges.
As the world gradually healed from the pandemic, I couldn't help but feel immense gratitude for the growth that had taken place within our family. K's journey with ADHD and anxiety led to their personal development and enriched my professional career.
And so, with a heart full of love and a mind fortified with knowledge, we stepped into the future, ready to face any obstacle that came our way. As a mother and a licensed clinical psychologist, I knew that the bond between K and me was unbreakable, and together, we could conquer whatever challenges life had in store for us.
